Night Etching: Jehovah Mekaddishkem

And the Lord said to Moses, "You are to speak to the people of Israel, and say, 'Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the Lord, sanctify you. -Exodus 31:13,14

Jehovah Mekaddishkem means, "the Lord who sanctifies." What does sanctify mean and why does God want that for us?
Sanctify means to be set apart to be dedicated to God.  The Sabbaths were very important for that is when all the Jewish people would stop their work for a 24 hour period. They would begin with a small ceremony, dinner with the family, and the rest of the time was spent resting from their work.
God created the world in six days and the day after He rested. Why did God rest? He never sleeps and He never slumbers; our God never tires. So, why did He create a day of rest?
He created the day of rest for His people; a way to set them apart to be dedicated to honoring Him that day. Amen!
